| Abstract: | The measurements of inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon, total nitrogen and phosphorus and dissolved oxygen were carried out during seven upwelling events along the northern seaside of the Hel Peninsula (the southern Baltic Sea, April 2000 - August 2002). It was found that the nutrient concentrations were distinctly higher in the upwelling area compared to the surrounding waters. In the surface layer of the upwelling centre maximum concentrations of nitrates, ammonia, phosphates and silicates were 1.52, 2.61, 5.81 and 13.07 mmol m-3, respectively. The above values were 4.2, 2.2, 5.8 and 2.5 times higher as compared to the concentrations observed in the surface waters at the reference area. The waters upwelled from deeper sea layers were characterized by low DIN : PO4 3- (0.25-9.78), NO3 - : PO4 3- (0.24-3.16) and NO3 - : SiO4 4- (0.03-0.12) molar ratios what indicated that they were richer with phosphorus and silicon in relation to nitrogen. The phosphorus concentration increased as the distance between the upwelling centre and the Hel foreland decreased. On the other hand, in the surface water at the reference station, typical seasonal changes in molar ratios of the above substances were noted, i.e. low values in spring and the optimum ones in summer. It was found that from April till the beginning of August the oxygen concentration was higher in the upwelling waters as compared to the surrounding ones. An opposite situation was observed in late summer and early autumn. Contrary to the surrounding waters, the upwelling waters have never been supersaturated with oxygen. |
