| Abstract: | The influence of upwelling on qualitative and quantitative mesozooplankton composition was estimated based on the material collected during seven upwelling events (2000-2002) along the northern seaside of the Hel Peninsula (the Baltic Sea). Taxonomic composition, abundance and mesozooplankton biomass were affected not only by local upwelling but also by the influx of waters from the Gulf of Gdańsk. The main components of mesozooplankton were species of Copepoda, Cladocera and Rotatoria, typical for the open Baltic and the Gulf of Gdańsk. Mesozooplankton diversity was relatively high, frequently in the upwelling centre. However, it was not reflected in abundance and biomass level in that region. The highest concentrations of mesozooplankton were noted in the reference and transitional areas. The most significant differences in mesozooplankton assemblages were noted when the distance and the differences in water temperature between the upwelling centre and the reference area were the biggest. However, coastal upwelling was only a moderate disturbance of relatively poor and rather eurytopic Baltic mesozooplankton. Therefore, short-time upwellings could not result in the formation of stable and distinctly distinguished mesozooplankton assemblages in the Hel Peninsula region. |
